Mariah Carey reshapes HERstory: cements Christmas reign at #1
Christmas time is indeed in the air again. But for the Songbird Supreme, Mariah Carey, it is also the time she continues to dominate the charts and radio airplay with the annual resurgence of her staple hit All I Want for Christmas Is You, solidifying her reign as the Queen of Christmas.
Many singers attempt to venture into holiday music, but only a few manage to bag a staple classic in their discography, and Mariah Carey is one of them. Fun fact: She wrote “All I Want for Christmas Is You” as one of three original songs for her first Christmas album in 1994.
This week, she unlocks a historic milestone, as All I Want for Christmas Is You returns to the summit of the Billboard Hot 100, spending 21 weeks at #1, becoming the longest-running chart-topping song of all time. Although she already secured the record in its 20th week last week, her reign seems to not end anytime soon.
Reclaiming her crown
However, this is not the first time Mariah Carey has held this record. Previously, One Sweet Day–her duet with Boyz II Men, spent 16 weeks at the top from 1995 to 1996. She managed to secure this feat for over 23 years, until Old Town Road by Lil Nas X, which spent 19 weeks at #1, dethroned it. Mariah acknowledged this on her Twitter page and “passes the torch” to the new record holder.
When All I Want for Christmas Is You peaked at #1 for the first time in 2019, nobody knew that it would become somewhat of an annual tradition that Mariah Carey would reign every December, leading to the viral meme that she hibernates throughout the year, then becomes defrosted, when “IT’S TIME!”
Record broken, milestones unlocked
Nevertheless, everything turned out to her favor. With Billboard issuing its update last week, December 16, it is official. Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas Is You spends a non-consecutive 20 weeks at the top spot of the Hot 100.
At last, she reclaims the record she lost and is now the longest-running #1 song in history. This time, solely a female artist holds the record, cementing her status as a living legend and setting another industry standard moving forward.
Additionally, Mariah Carey becomes the only artist ever to have three songs spend over 14 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100: One Sweet Day featuring Boyz II Men, with 16 weeks; We Belong Together, with 14 weeks; and the latest edition, All I Want for Christmas Is You, with a record-breaking 21 weeks.
Mariah Carey recognizes this milestone and thanks her fans in a humorous manner, which is a call-back to her previous Tweet:
Queen of Christmas
Ultimately, Mariah Carey becomes the first artist in history to spend 100 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Even without All I Want For Christmas Is You, she maintains her lead with 79 weeks, holding a 19-week gap over second-place Rihanna, who has 60 weeks.
Alongside this major milestone, she also broke another record on TikTok with her “Here For It All Holiday Special,” gaining 1.3M viewers on the platform, proving that her artistry resonates across generations decades later, and further legitimizes her title as the Queen of Christmas.
With the Philippines being the country known as the longest celebrant of the Christmas season, spanning from September to January, the Filipino Lambs or Mariah Carey fans were blessed when she did a surprise performance of All I Want for Christmas Is You as an encore during her recent concert, The Celebration of Mimi last October 14, 2025 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
As Christmas comes nearer, there is no more appropriate time to feel the yuletide spirit with holiday tunes, and who could be a more perfect playlist but the Queen of Christmas Music herself.
