Geca Morales Steps Into Her Most Confident Era

Some people live their lives according to plan or timelines, but for Geca Morales, it is rather something beyond that. For years, she stepped onto stages hoping to prove something. From joining singing competitions to reality television contests, every performance she has given was one step closer to conquering self-doubt as a singer-songwriter.

Throughout her career, Geca was able to showcase her talent through several competitive singing competitions. She joined a nationwide songwriting competition, a local mainstream reality contest, and an international competition in California. Indeed, her talent took her to places she was beyond grateful for.

Today, Geca finally steps out of the ‘chasing validation’ era and enters a brand new period that’s bigger: The era of a singer-songwriter with clever songwriting process, good storytelling, and has a growing music universe of characters that her listeners would relate to.

Before stepping into her identity as a solo artist, Geca spent years navigating the competitive world of singing contests. Because for her, joining competitions felt like a way to prove one’s ability to sing.

Geca admitted, “I’ve struggled with believing in my own talent that I wanted to gain recognition or a tangible award/medal that would prove that ‘I am a singer,’ not just to others but also to myself. I was very focused on impressing other people and escaping self-doubt.”

Now, she sees these experiences as a crucial part of her growth. Geca shared, “I think being able to do all these things already gave me the confidence to be the artist that I am now.”

Like many aspiring Filipino singers, Geca grew up in a culture where powerful birit vocals often became the benchmark of talent. But knowing she wasn’t naturally the kind of singer known for belting towering high notes sometimes made her question her capability to stand alongside other vocalists and singers.

Despite all her self-doubt and experiences, it helped her the way she saw herself. While other artists enjoy a fast-paced, almost fleeting journey, Geca wants to be an artist with longevity.

She shared,“I want to be an artist with longevity. I don’t want to just drop songs and post it on socials and that’s it. I want to build a universe around my music that is connected visually, lyrically and emotionally [so] that my listeners could grow with me and feel like they are part of an evolving story.”

The story behind HABOLABOLA

Songwriting is one of the flairs Geca is proud to show off. In her words, she wants to be known for her smart songwriting, concepts, and music that will resonate to her listeners. And her talent comes through clearly in her latest single, HABOLABOLA. A track born from an unexpected playful moment with her dog, Chichay.

Geca shared,“I just thought na ‘oo nga ‘no’ ‘yung aso hahabulin ‘yung bola kahit san ibato.’ Parang inuuto ko ‘yung aso ko minsan na ibabato ko [‘yung bola] kunyare [sa] malayo pero ‘di ko pa binibitawan tapos ‘yung dog ko tatakbo [tapos] magtataka ba’t wala ‘yung bola. So basically pinagtripan ko ‘yung aso ko, and that started the concept. I related it with love na parang aso na kahit sa’n ibato ‘yung bola, susunod ka pa rin, hahabulin pa rin.”

Aside from the story behind the song, Geca also showed off her clever side in naming the title of the track. Turning the conyo phrase, “habol a bola” into the catchy and cheeky one-word uppercase title HABOLABOLA.

Looking ahead, Geca is now preparing to expand the world she’s building through her music. With a new album currently in the works, she promises a sound that is fiercer, more confident, and playfully bold. Accompanied by more visuals, performances, and storytelling.

She shared, “Definitely more music, more storytelling. I’m working on an album this year and I’m excited to share it to everybody.”

With her overall experience and her authenticity as an artist, she’s also manifesting bigger stages and hopes to collaborate with a hip-hop rapper someday.

Being the singer-songwriter that she is, Geca truly is stepping into a period where she doesn’t follow a predetermined schedule. Rather, she is choosing to move at her own pace.

We don’t have to follow a specific timeline [because] the moment to live is now,” Geca shared.

At 32, she refuses to let societal expectations define when an ambition should begin or end. Because for her, this era she’s currently in is beyond timelines.

Geca Morales’ new song HABOLABOLA is now streaming on all streaming platforms, including Spotify, YouTube, and Apple Music.
