What’s up with KKV and why do Filipinos love it?

The Pipol loves to shop, and KKV is the place to be. With the emergence of KKV stores in the Philippines, it reflects the purchasing behavior of every Filipino. How and why?

Since its launch on December 19, 2024 in the Philippines, many Filipinos have been frequent visitors of KKV. Although lifestyle and variety stores are not new to us, it is as if traps are catching Filipinos instead of mice, except the bait isn’t cheese. They’re cute and trendy items from KKV.

The success of KKV’s Grand Opening

Founded by the KK Group, KKV is one of the many leading trend retail enterprises that has expanded and launched its branch here in the Philippines. There is also The Colorist and X11, leaving a mark on their Southeast Asian expansion. But Filipinos seem to have KKV as their favorite.

The store’s grand opening could prove this. During their launch in SM Mall of Asia (MOA) in Pasay City, the store drew attention from a massive crowd. KKV also debuted at SM North EDSA and Gateway Mall, garnering the same success as the branch in MOA.

Variety stores have been around for a while, but KKV sparked excitement in Filipino consumers, providing trendy lifestyle items like makeup, snacks, toys, stationery, and more. While other variety stores offer the same, the store also offers exclusive Chinese brands and popular character items.

In an article written on Business Wire, KKV has quickly become one of the most talked-about new retail brands among young Filipinos. Its Manila stores recorded strong foot traffic and high sell-through rates in key categories such as snacks, beauty, and lifestyle accessories.

To add, posts on social media featuring “#KKVPhilippines” gained notable engagement across platforms like TikTok and Instagram. This reflects the younger generation’s enthusiasm for creative and experience-driven shopping. KKV offers exactly that.

Filipino consumption in KKV

When we enter a KKV store, it is most likely that we leave with a paper bag in hand. From students to working young adults, KKV has selling points that give people the strong urge to go in and splurge!

However, the way KKV aligns with our purchasing behavior is part of its appeal. What is this behavior? How do Filipinos decide on purchasing items?

As Filipinos, we enjoy filling empty spaces with objects that we don’t need. We succumb to the idea of maximalism. Oftentimes, it’s because we’re naturally sentimental, or we just enjoy flaunting our identity.

Filipinos enjoy discovering fun and quirky items. Hence, the hoarder culture. Filipinos hoard items, thinking, “I might need this in the future.” Or sometimes, “This is cute, I can justify the purchase.”

With KKV’s colorful aisles and displays, and trendy product lines, the store baits Filipinos easily. It satisfies Filipinos’ urge to scavenge for cute and trendy finds, matching their purchasing habits.

Cha, a frequent visitor of KKV said the store is organized, fun to look at, and bright. Additionally, the store offers variety—from toiletries to affordable packaged desserts. However, for Cha, she admits that most of her purchases from the store are impulse buys.

She said, “Maybe kasi mura ‘yung items, you can buy something P60 and up. For instance, one of my favorite matcha cookies only costs P70.”

Meanwhile, another frequent visitor of KKV’s Gateway branch said she got excited when she first entered the store. There were stationery, art materials, beauty products, and snacks, breaking Carla’s expectation of the store only offering collectibles and toys.

Carla also admitted she purchases from the store on an impulse. She also highlighted the notion of KKV’s items being notably cheaper compared to other variety stores, while offering a wider variety of good quality items.

The store’s edge

Filled with various items, ranging from daily essentials, home goods, cosmetics, snacks, lifestyle accessories, toys and collectibles, to stationery, KKV is a one-stop lifestyle store. It’s not just a cheap knick-knack store, and it’s not your traditional variety store.

The store is a mix of three different hallmarks—novelty, quality, and variety. Hence, it stands out from other variety stores. Another frequent visitor of KKV, Kristine, said, “The store is very organized and colorful. Plus, the items’ price range are reasonable for their quality and cuteness.”

This proves what KKV is built for. While variety stores also offer different items, some cheap and others more expensive, KKV gives a fresh take on lifestyle stores, even for those on a budget.

KKV invests in their store, and it shows. Compared to other variety stores, KKV entices consumers with the help of its interior. Cha said the store’s setup makes it stand out. Unlike other lifestyle and variety stores, KKV’s display is organized by category, helping customers easily find what they want or need.

She also added that the store is well lit. KKV’s bright yellow interior draws customers in, and with their wide aisles, customers will surely enjoy their stay in the store.

KKV offers everything younger audiences look for in a lifestyle and variety store. It serves its purpose as a variety store, while ensuring Filipino customers’ enjoyment. It truly is more than a lifestyle and variety store—it is a store with vivid life. Hence, Filipinos’ love for it.
