From a childhood dream to reality: Alex Eala turns the tables, making history at Wimbledon 2026
The Start of Her-story
“I am happy I made it to the finals of the 12-and-under girls and waiting for my game today. I hope I win this match.” – Alex Eala (October 30, 2012)
The caption from Eala’s Facebook post almost 14 years ago has aged well as she made history on Wimbledon’s legendary Centre Court against World No. 6 (no World No. 3). What was once an underrated sport in the Philippines has now become the talk of the town.
At 4 years old, Alex Eala started playing tennis as a family bonding activity. Later on, it became a meaningful passion, which led her to move thousand miles away from home. Nine years later, as she approached her teenage years, Alex moved to Spain to train under the Rafa Nadal Academy to grow as a well-honed tennis athlete.
As years went by, she fought and silently climbed a rough path. Although it took her a few years to prove herself, she patiently waited for her moment. At the 2025 Miami Open, her steady climb culminated in a career breakthrough: she jumped from World No. 140 into the Top 100 after becoming the first Filipina to defeat a Top 10 player.

Fast forward to the present: on July 5, 2026, the young Eala snatched the Wimbledon crown from defending champion Iga Świątek of Poland. Once ranked beyond the world’s top 1,000, Alex Eala, a Filipina tennis player, defied everyone’s expectations by defeating the World No. 1 in a Grand Slam Tournament, marking one of the most significant moments in Philippine tennis history.
From a Dream to Reality
Eala’s win against Świątek is the greatest gift she could give to her younger self. She once dreamed of playing at Wimbledon, a tournament she has always called her favorite, and holds a special place in her heart.
“For someone who grew up in the Philippines, you know, I went to train with my brother and my grandfather every day after school with my ruffled socks, light-up shoes, and chubby cheeks. So for her, this is everything.”
In 2020, Alex Eala’s ranking was at its lowest. But after all the sweat, effort, and sleepless nights, after spending 12 hours a day training outdoors, she managed to reach the top. The climb was far from easy. It demanded countless sacrifices. But every challenge became meaningful when she earned the No. 32 spot in the world tennis rankings.
“Such an intense battle, so I’m really proud of how I fought and held my own out there.”
Setback
After her historic win against Poland’s Iga Świątek, Alex Eala faced a setback in her next match against Jasmine Paolini. Despite the loss, she achieved another milestone by becoming the first Filipino to reach the Round of 16 in a Grand Slam tournament. During her match against Paolini, Eala’s ranking climbed to No. 29. And as of July 7, 2026, she rose one spot higher to No. 28 in the world tennis rankings.
What makes this athlete remarkable is that she did not lose her will to fight after a setback. Even after her fall, she remains determined to compete with her head held high at the Mubadala DC Open. She will face a strong lineup of competitors.
May her meaningful journey serve as an inspiration to every dreamer. Remember, a little spark can always make the loudest noise. Never underestimate the impact of a small beginning, because the tiniest flame can challenge the impossible.
